Dharamsala, Home of the Dalai Lama

Yet another fascinating people live in the Himalayas, in India's state of Himachal.  They're Tibetan, and they followed their leader -- the Dalai Lama -- when he fled Chinese oppression in 1959 and established a capital in exile in the hill town of Dharamsala.  He chose an idyllic spot, with old-growth trees and snow-capped vistas.  Narrow, vertical buildings dot the hillsides.  Buddhist prayer flags fly everywhere, and there are temples big and small at which followers spin prayer wheels.  The Tibetan culture continues, with a learning center for handicraft arts.  And monks in maroon-colored robes who reside at the town's hilltop monastery are all about town.  I've always been a fan of His Holiness, so I'm sorry that he's away.  Believe it or not, he's in Los Angeles today!  But we saw his photo everywhere, so we felt his wise and peaceful presence.
