I’m starting in Bangkok; I’m staying here before and between my visits to Bhutan and the Maldives. And what a contrast there will be between the two destinations! I’ll be walking and hiking in Bhutan, joining a small group trip organized by the company Backroads. And I’ll arrive via seaplane at a resort in the Maldives, with plans to SCUBA dive and snorkel there.
“Where is Bhutan” is a question I was asked again and again when I told friends of my plans. The answer is that the Kingdom of Bhutan is high in the Himalayas, near Nepal and Tibet, and sharing borders with both India and China. And then came “where are the Maldives”. It’s a nation of islands — nearly 1,200 in all — located off the southern tip of India. And they’re known for their white sand beaches and crystal-clear, turquoise waters.
So more to come from altitudes as high as 10,000 feet, and then below sea level . . .
